The Different AI Maturity Levels

Maturity Level 0: No Formal AI Strategy

This is where it all strats.  

By having a  limited awareness of AI capabilities, and no formal strategies or initiatives exist.

Your organization knows of AI but has no idea where and how it should fit the business.

Characteristics:

  • Limited Awareness: Basic understanding of AI, with no strategic plans or initiatives.
  • Minimal Expertise: Few or no in-house AI experts or resources.
  • No Data Strategy: Lack of structured data collection and management practices.

Maturity Level 1: Exploration & Experimentation

Title: Pilot Projects

Basic awareness of AI sparks pilot projects or proof-of-concept initiatives.

Data collection and exploration begin, but processes remain siloed.

It’s a step where organizations start to build their AI experiences and data need to support an AI strategy.

Characteristics:

  • Pilot Projects: Initial AI projects are started, often in isolation.
  • Data Exploration: Early stages of data collection and analysis.
  • Siloed Efforts: AI initiatives are confined to individual departments.
