Creating Safe AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) for All of Humanity

What does it mean: Making AGI safe for all of humanity?  Making AGI safe means creating systems that care about people's well-being and follow rules.

I love the idea of making AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) safe for everyone, as ChatGPT’s slogan and vision state.

AGI is a big leap forward for humanity and making it safe for everyone is key in making this technology available for everyone.

Recently   Mark Zuckerberg announced that his new goal is creating artificial general intelligence.

There are different ways of making this technology safe for all humans.

For Mark Zuckerberg it’s making the technologic open source so it is given the advantage available for everyone to use or for other companies like ChatGPT is making it safe by human standards.

Regardless of what the way is, let’s understand what the concept behind this statement really means, why we need to make it safe and what we can do on an individual level to prepare for it already today using what we currently have access to , AI.

A good place to start is to  think about what AGI could mean for us.

In my daydream, AGI helps me with chores like laundry, cleaning, and driving my kids around.

Imagine having a personal assistant for grocery shopping and cleaning up after my kids.

This reflects my personal preferences—you are allowed for yours in your dream. 🙂

Once I snap out of this dream, I start thinking about what a big challenge lies beyond this statement.

What does it mean: Making AGI safe for all of humanity?

Making AGI safe means creating systems that care about people’s well-being and follow rules.

It needs to think about what’s right and wrong, be clear about how AGI makes decisions, and make sure it won’t accidentally do something harmful.

Here are some important things need to be consider around safe AGI :

Doing What’s Right: We want AGI to follow good rules and avoid doing anything that could hurt people or society.

Being Clear: AGI should be easy for us to understand so that we know how and why it makes decisions.

Staying Safe: We need to make sure AGI won’t do anything bad by accident. It should have safety measures like emergency brakes or rules to follow.

Treating Everyone Fairly: AGI should be fair to everyone, not picking favorites or treating some people better than others.

Keeping an Eye on Things: We should have a way to watch over AGI and tell it what to do if needed.

Working Together: How can we work alongside this new entity and make the most out of this partnership?

The goal is to make AGI like a good friend that cares about what’s important to us and doesn’t cause problems.

To truly appreciate the complexity and gain perspective, it’s crucial to understand that AGI, distinct from humans, is tailored for a specific purpose.

Its cognitive abilities become secondary if its only existence is based on the goal he was designed for.

To gain prospective lets use an example: AGI as a personal assitance

When it’s designed as our personal assistant, that becomes its sole reason for existence.

Consider the scenario of a child’s education. Imagine an AGI designed to assist in teaching and providing personalized educational content. Now, let’s say the child is struggling with a particular subject, and the AGI suggests introducing a highly advanced learning module that covers complex topics in an accelerated manner. The AGI, focused on optimizing the child’s learning experience, might readily endorse the advanced module, believing it would significantly enhance the child’s understanding. However, as a parent, you might hesitate. Concerns about your child feeling overwhelmed, missing out on foundational concepts, or the potential social implications of being at a different learning level than peers may influence your decision.

Whatever the consideration will be, this example illustrates a situation where AGI, driven by its specific task and programmed objectives, might advocate for an approach that a human, considering broader aspects and nuances, might approach more cautiously.

It underscores the distinctive perspectives and considerations that humans bring to decision-making, encompassing emotional, social, and developmental factors that go beyond the singular task focus of AGI.

As AGI advances and will be integrated into various aspects of our lives, navigating these nuanced decisions will be a shared responsibility, where human judgment complements the capabilities of AGI for the holistic benefit of humanity.

We will never be able to expect all aspects of where AGI will need our holistic approach and should be trained as we go and evolve together.

This is why we need to see this as a partnership with a new entity that is already in our lives today as AI. To know what is our rule to play  and prepare for it.

Yes, we can prepare for it today!!!

What can we do today?

To understand what we can do today we should use the part that connects us both and get better at it.

Once understood that the realms that connect us with AGI is our thinking, it emphasizes where we should focus.

We should focus on how we think.

How can we get better at thinking?

By knowing ourselves, how and what we think about, we will understand AGI better, know what to expect, and how to partner up with it better.

The way to navigate our lives together will be through thoughts.

Understand it and what should be our response.

That will be its main form of training and adaptation.

In the realm of thinking, information is power, and what we need to develop is flexible thinking.

Developing Flexible Thinking: A Simple Guide

Ask Questions: Challenge your own and others’ beliefs. Ask why you think something is true. Are there different perspectives you haven’t considered?

Look at Different Ideas: Embrace diverse viewpoints. Understand that everyone sees things differently, and that’s okay. It enriches our understanding.

Check the Facts: Verify information from reliable sources. Be aware of bias in the information and seek a well-rounded view.

Decide Things Carefully: Take your time to evaluate information. Don’t rush to conclusions. Be aware of personal biases influencing your decisions.

Be Okay with Not Knowing Everything: Accept uncertainty. Some things may not have clear answers, and that’s fine.

Say What You Mean Clearly: Communicate openly and honestly. Be aware of how your words may be interpreted by others.

Fix Problems: Break down problems objectively. Avoid letting personal biases dictate your approach to solving issues.

Think about Your Own Thinking: Reflect on your thoughts and beliefs. Understand whether your convictions are based on evidence or personal bias.

Keep Learning: Stay open to new ideas. Continuously reassess your understanding based on new information, adjusting for biases.

Great ideas, right? Some of you probably say there is nothing we should do.

Well, it is not over. In order for us to actually achieve that, we need to understand our biases and personalization process.

Understanding Human Personalization and Bias:

Human Personalization:

Begins from birth and encompasses the shaping of perspectives through societal, cultural, educational, economic, and familial influences.

These factors form the foundation of how we perceive the world, shaping our values, core beliefs, and overarching ideas that define our lives.

For example, personalization will shape our answers to questions like: What does success look like for us? What do we think a good friendship means? What does family life entail? This process not only defines who we are but also influences how we present ourselves in the world, shaping every aspect of our personality and our thought processes.

Bias:

Refers to the way our minds process information based on personal beliefs shaped by our personalization process.

Essentially, to make it easy: where we grew up? There are various types of biases, including confirmation bias, perception bias, and the halo effect. These biases indicate that our decision-making process, often termed as logic, may not be as objective as we think. It operates more like a software program, running based on what we believe to be true. For instance, if we are programmed to perceive success as wealth, a prestigious title, or a fancy car, we are compelled to aspire to these predefined notions. To instigate genuine shifts, awareness is key. Until we actively investigate and challenge notions of success that deviate from our ingrained beliefs, we remain bound by these preconceptions. Identifying and addressing biases is crucial for fair and open-minded thinking. Unconscious biases can significantly impact judgment, decision-making, and perceptions. Therefore, acknowledging the journey of human personalization becomes the starting point for understanding biases. By recognizing how personalization shapes biases, individuals can strive for a more objective and unbiased approach to critical thinking.

Example: Enhancing Customer Interactions with AI in Sales

Consider a scenario in the sales domain where a professional collaborates with AI while embracing a flexible mindset:

Scenario:

Picture yourself as a sales representative utilizing an AI-powered Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. The AI, adept at analyzing customer data, identifying patterns, and proposing personalized recommendations for each client, has learned your preferences, communication style, and typical sales methodologies through continuous interaction and analysis.

Traditional Approach:

Without a flexible mindset, the assumption might be that acting on AI suggestions is synonymous with progress and embracing change. However, this perspective might miss the broader spectrum of possibilities lying beyond AI’s existing information and data. It could overlook the potential for superior strategies by seeking new information outside both the individual’s and AI’s current awareness.

Understanding that Ai is not better than you, it is you!!!!  Is key.

Flexible Mind Approach:

With a flexible mindset, the sales representative recognizes that AI is designed to complement their efforts, prompting a more thoughtful consideration of the data used for generating suggestions.

In this approach, the salesperson directs the AI to explore additional data sources, ensuring a constant influx of fresh, data-driven perspectives. A proactive step involves implementing A/B testing for communication methods between the sales representative and the AI counterpart. This guarantees a continual balance between established practices and novel, AI-informed possibilities.

Benefits of a Flexible Mind in this Scenario:

Mindful Collaboration: The salesperson is attentive to the data AI uses, ensuring a thoughtful collaboration.

Proactive Exploration: Initiates AI to explore untapped data sources, enriching its suggestions.

Continuous Adaptation: Implements A/B testing to ensure a dynamic balance between tradition and innovation.

Enhanced Decision-Making: Incorporates a broader range of possibilities, surpassing current limitations.

Symbiotic Growth: Ensures a harmonious evolution by blending AI’s capabilities with human intuition.

In essence, a flexible mindset in sales fosters a synergistic relationship with AI—utilizing its strengths while actively contributing to its continuous improvement for more effective and adaptive customer interactions.
